PHP CVE Inquiries and Mattermost Server Protection

Applies to: Mattermost Server v11.6 and later (verified on v11.6.1 and v11.7), official release packages and official Docker images, including prepackaged plugins.

Context: Guidance for security teams and automated vulnerability scanners evaluating PHP-related CVEs.

Overview

PHP CVEs and advisories do not apply to Mattermost Server, and no administrative intervention is needed.

Why Your Deployment is Secure Mattermost relies on a modern Go and TypeScript architecture. Standard deployments, official Docker images (built on a streamlined distroless Debian 12 base), and official plugins contain no PHP interpreter or code libraries. Consequently, PHP vulnerabilities have no vector or component to impact your Mattermost environment.

đź’ˇ Recommendation

Treat PHP CVEs as not applicable to Mattermost Server, and trace any scanner finding that names PHP back to the exact flagged path. This covers Mattermost's own components only, not other software on the same host.

Confirm the Flagged Path in the Scanner Report

Check the file path, package name, and image digest that the scanner reports for the PHP finding. Mattermost's web app includes a syntax-highlighting module that colours PHP code in messages. It is JavaScript and does not execute PHP, but a scanner that matches on component names can still flag it.

Check the Host and Proxy for PHP

If the finding points to a path outside the Mattermost installation directory or outside the official image, the PHP component belongs to the host operating system, a custom base image, or another application behind the same reverse proxy. Remediate it there, not by upgrading Mattermost.

⚠️ Important: A custom image built on a general-purpose base, or a shared VM that also runs PHP applications, can carry PHP packages that the official Mattermost image does not include. Scan results for those environments reflect the base system, not Mattermost.

Stay Current on Mattermost Patch Releases

Mattermost's own security fixes ship in patch releases. Upgrade to the latest patch release of your version line, independent of any PHP CVE.
